The Indomitable Force of the Attraction of Nature
A temporary art intervention by Klaus Littmann (Littmann Kulturprojekte) based on a drawing by Austrian artist Max Peintner
In 2019 (8th September to 31st October), Austria’s biggest public art project will take place at Klagenfurt’s Wörthersee Stadium: A forest in the stadium – inspired by the drawing “Die ungebrochene Anziehungskraft der Natur” (“The Indomitable Force of the Attraction of Nature”) by Max Peintner. Spectators can admire the tree spectacle in the stadium day and night – in natural light or under floodlights. The project can also be understood as a memorial, that in the future nature will only be able to be admired in especially assigned areas, as is already the case with animals in zoos.
One image and its aura
The installation is based on a visual idea with a sociopolitical message which, over the years, has become a versatile icon, not just in the art world. The artwork has been portrayed in over 20 German-language school books and reference books, as well as in versions in France, Denmark, Estonia, the Czech Republic and Hungary and is now an impulse for philosophy, social culture, biology, anthropology and literature.
A comprehensive supporting programme will accompany the installation in the stadium – in cooperation with well-established institutions from all sectors of the art world (Carinthian Museum of Modern Art, Stadtgalerie Klagenfurt, Stadttheater Klagenfurt, Kunstverein Kärnten, ORF Kärnten/Festival of German-Language Literature, Musilhaus Klagenfurt). In addition, the socio-critical and ecological background of the topic will be highlighted.
