From mid-November Klagenfurt turns into a Christmas capital on Lake Wörthersee. Austria’s southernmost provincial capital celebrates Advent and the Christmas period between the wonderful Renaissance city centre and Lake Wörthersee, which is gentle and calm in winter. The different squares in the city contribute to the ambiance during Advent:
On the centrally located Neuer Platz is the colourful Christmas Market right in front of the City Hall – with over 50 exhibitors and food outlets, this is the largest Advent market in Carinthia; the small but very special Christmas market on the Domplatz embodies “old-style Christmas” and delights visitors with its regional handicrafts and traditional or sacred music; the “quiet Advent” in the Landhaushof invites listeners to enjoy musical titbits from Carinthia every Friday; and families look forward to visiting what Minimundus has to offer, which also includes an Advent circus.
New Year’s Eve in the city is rather less quiet. On 30 December you can already raise your glass to the New Year at the rural New Year’s Eve, when the Neuer Platz becomes a dancefloor and the enchanting stalls set up all around offer warming drinks and Carinthian delicacies. And the same thing happens the following evening too. But the true hub of the New Year’s Eve hustle and bustle is on the Alter Platz between the mulled wine stalls. You can recover from the celebrations in the New Year with a winter’s walk in the east bay.
A visit to the city’s museums and galleries is enjoyable. The best way to treat yourself is to attend a performance by the exceptional ensemble of the Stadttheater or a classical concert at the Konzerthaus Klagenfurt. Then during Carnival time, the “Stadtrichter” (“city judges”) – Klagenfurt’s carnival guild – celebrate with the “city court”, which makes fun of politics, society and world events.
