ACTIVE AND ATHLETIC

My perfect day in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee.

A run along Lake Wörthersee, when the fog rises from the water and the first rays of sunshine hit the water’s surface – there is no better way to start the day. After a refreshing shower, stroll through the Old Town and enjoy a coffee speciality and a Carinthian breakfast at one of the numerous small cafés. Then it is time for a guided tour of the Old Town, which takes place every Friday and Saturday. The tour starts at Dr.-Arthur-Lemisch-Platz and takes you, in about 90 minutes, to the most beautiful places and sights in the city. The guides provide the background information to the sights. At the end, there won’t be much that you don’t know about the history of this beautiful city. Health-conscious gourmets can enjoy a light lunch at Restaurant Kleeblatt on St. Veiter Ring. Everything here is organic, not just tasty, but also healthy and with lots of homemade specialities. In the afternoon, the choice is yours. How about a game of tennis on one of the many courts in the city? Or a spot of horse-riding, where you can discover the surroundings? Or swimming, sunbathing, and stand-up paddle boarding in the eastern bay? Beach volleyball or a quick bike ride? Whatever you decide to do, afterwards you can relax and regenerate in the Day Spa of the Seepark Hotel, opposite Minimundus, the miniature world on Lake Wörthersee. It is open every day until 10pm. You can have dinner there or in one of the many restaurants in the city centre.

Winter

Possibilities for doing sport in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee are endless in summer. But also in winter you don’t have to sit inside and twiddle your thumbs in the provincial capital of Carinthia. You can go ski touring and discover the countryside in the surrounding mountains. But also directly in the city, activities such as ice-hockey are possible; on the Hallegg ponds or the Kreuzbergl ponds, for example. With a bit of luck, you could also skate across the frozen Lake Wörthersee. When it freezes, it becomes the largest natural ice rink in Austria. Another beautiful activity is a hike in the snow on the Kreuzbergl, or a wintry run along the eastern shore of the lake. And don’t forget to take the time to stroll through the Christmas market, which is already open from mid-November. Here you will find Christmas decorations, toffee apples, sausages and baked potatoes, frankincense and myrrh. At the Klagenfurt indoor swimming pool, the Olympic distance pool means you can do your lengths and then visit the sauna to relax your muscles after all that sport. If you are travelling with children, we can recommend a few hours of tobogganing on the Schleppe Alm. Guaranteed fun for big and small.
