The 2017/2018 season at the Stadttheater in Klagenfurt opens on 14 September 2017 with Giuseppe Verdi’s opera La Traviata in the production by Richard Brunel, under the musical direction of Giedrė Šlekytė. The role of Violetta is sung by Claudia Boyle. This is followed by Massenet’s Werther, conducted by Lorenzo Viotti, and “the opera of all operas”, Mozart’s Don Giovanni, in the production by Florentine Klepper. The title role is sung by Rodion Pogossov. Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk by Dmitri Shostakovich is performed under the musical direction of Kristiina Poska, in a production by Immo Karaman. The Wizard of Oz, the cult status musical about the adventures of Dorothy as she travels in a magical country, is staged by Aron Stiehl. With Swan Lake, the Slovenian State Ballet from Ljubljana makes a guest appearance in Klagenfurt.
The drama season opens with the world premiere of a theatre project by Cesare Lievi on the subject of Martin Luther. Hier stehe ich – ich kann nicht anders. La mia posizione è questa arose out of a co-production with theatres in Rome and Bologna, and consists of twelve staged fragments performed by German-speaking and Italian-speaking actors. Oscar Wilde’s The Importance of Being Earnest sees the return of Michael Sturminger to the Stadttheater. Other cast members include Miriam Fussenegger, Traute Hoess and Maria Hofstätter. Bertold Brecht’s Mutter Courage und ihre Kinder, a parable about war and business, will be staged by Bernd Liepold-Mosser, with Anne Bennent taking the role of Mutter Courage. The final production of the season will be Mateja Koležnik’s staging of Chekhov’s Ivanov, with Gerti Drassl, Franziska Hackl and Markus Hering.
Our programme for children and young people offers the world premiere of Ulrich Hub’s Rumpelstilz! on the main stage, Anders, a cooperation with the Theater WalTzwerk in the Kammerlichtspiele, a puppet show by Josefine Merkatz for the little ones, and Mein seltsamer Freund Walter for children aged 8 and over – exciting theatre experiences for all ages. Our popular theatre groups Theaterspielclubs I and II will be continued under the guidance of experienced drama teachers.
Theatrical stars are also to be seen in our Statt Theater-Reihe: Bibiana Beglau, Ursula Strauss and Philipp Hochmair will all be coming to the Stadttheater to present individual shows. Two guest appearances by major drama theatres and a “Special Edition” of the talk show “Helfrieds strenge Kammer” are also planned.
The Carinthian Symphony Orchestra continues on its successful path with an outstanding concert programme for 2017/2018 with international guest conductors and singers. From the 2018/2019 season, the orchestra’s designated chief conductor will be Nicholas Carter.
