Klagenfurt 500 – of dragons, ashes and the rebirth of a city
It all began with a greedy dragon, the Lindwurm, who according to legend held the small settlement at Lake Wörthersee in fear and was only defeated by the mighty Hercules. Today they both adorn the most beautiful square of the city, in the form of landmark statues. In 1514, Klagenfurt burnt down to its foundation walls.
On 24th April 1518, Emperor Maximilian gave the city to the noble estates as a gift in the form of a legal act that was unique in Europe. They entrusted the reconstruction to the Italian master builder dell’Allio. The city was modernised, fortified, enlarged and improved.
This year, our Renaissance city celebrates its 500-year jubilee with numerous festivities – starting with the festival week at the end of April with concerts, guided tours, exhibitions and a ball. Superb Carinthian choirs will be performing in June in the Landhaus courtyard, and in July the World Body Painting Festival has the city’s jubilee as its theme.
Come with us and enjoy the story of the city and its surroundings, from its historical and culinary sides. Between the Old Town and Lake Wörthersee, the southernmost provincial capital in Austria can be found at the intersection of three cultures – Carinthian, Slovenian and Italian. That’s well worth investigating!
