The most popular place in summer – which in terms of the temperature often starts in Klagenfurt at the beginning of May – is naturally the lake. Swimming in the east bay, eating ice cream in the Maria Loretto Restaurant, drinking an Aperol Spritz in the Lido Restaurant. As well as fun sports such as banana boat rides or stand up paddle boarding, activities such as running, cycling or inline skating are also attractive options on the many cycle paths alongside the city’s rivers.
The Europapark right next to Klagenfurt’s Strandbad swimming beach is an inviting spot for older people to take a stroll, younger ones to play (enormous children’s playground) and teenagers to skate and play beach volleyball. But you don’t always have to work up a sweat yourself. You can also opt to watch other people doing so while you cheer them on, for example at major sporting events such as the Ironman (1 July 2018) or the half marathon “Kärnten läuft” (24 – 26 August 2018).
As the sun sets over the lake, you can give some unhurried thought to how to spend the evening. In one of the many sociable pubs by the lake? In one of the city’s numerous excellent restaurants? Or maybe something a bit livelier? During the summer, there are a whole range of parties and celebrations in the city that are not to be missed. Things get lively in the east bay every July when the Starnacht night of stars comes to Lake Wörthersee. Giants of the popular music charts such as Helene Fischer, Semino Rossi or Andrea Berg are amongst those appearing.
Visitors to the World Bodypainting Festival, which also takes place in July, can immerse themselves in a world of the imagination. Bodies turn into aesthetic canvases, and the special effects and hip music create an unrivalled setting.
But every summer a variety of top stars also come to Klagenfurt am Wörthersee. Grandees such as Sir Elton John, Robbie Williams, Herbert Grönemeyer or Bryan Adams have played here and set the Wörthersee Stadium rocking.
And you can find the right outfit for these parties in the sophisticated shops in the city centre.
