HÖFLEIN MOOR EUROPEAN NATURE RESERVE

The only European Nature Reserve found within the market community of Ebenthal is Höflein Moor outside Schwarz. It lies at an elevation of 770 meters in a flattish depression, surrounded for the most part by forest. From the northern edge of the moor, visitors are treated to a magnificent view of the Hochobir.

The moor itself is the result of so-called “dead ice” formation, which means it dates back to the Ice Age. Höflein Moor consists of two parts, a high moor and a low moor. The high moor is made up primarily of peat bogs. Bog rosemary, bilberries along with heather and bog pine are characteristic. The central high moor is surrounded by sedge. In the fringe zones, we see clear signs that a forest of black alder is developing.
