What should never be left out on every classic city trip?
Shopping, of course.

In the historical old town of Klagenfurt, which is entirely a pedestrian zone, you are in just the right place. Here you can stroll leisurely between handicraft shops, fashion shops, luxury boutiques, perfumeries, bookshops and excellent department stores. You will find plenty of souvenirs, specialities for the eyes and the tastebuds, old and new, interesting and innovative, and you will also discover two of the city’s important landmarks on the way: the Lindwurm on Neuer Platz square and the Wörtherseemandl on Dr.-Arthur-Lemisch-Platz square. Taking a break to replenish your energy at one of the many restaurants or cafés will round off your stroll, on which you are sure to have found a few bargains. Directly in the city centre you will also find the City Arkaden shopping centre, and a little further towards the outskirts of town, the Südpark, another slightly smaller shopping centre. We can highly recommend the weekly market, the Klagenfurt Benediktinermarkt, to lovers of culinary delights. It is here that on Thursdays and Saturdays, regional farmers from Carinthia, Friuli and Slovenia sell their products – all of them fresh, many from organic cultivation, and all incomparably delicious.

Downtown Klagenfurt is also a regular site for a variety of different markets. One of these is the weekly Benedictine Market, where you will also come across the statue of the Stone Fisherman. The market is a hub of communication, a place to meet people, chat with them, and perhaps enjoy something to eat or drink together. Thursdays and Saturdays are the traditional market days when products are also sold outside the market hall itself. In addition to the Benedictine Market, there are also seasonal markets such as the traditional Ursula Market, as well as the Christmas and Easter markets. You will discover a flea market during Klagenfurter Altstadtzauber, whilst International Ceramic Days also features an annual pottery market on the Neuer Platz. Since 2011 there has also been a yearly arts & crafts market on the Neuer Platz, where you can pick up all kinds of handmade items.
