"The malt gives the beer its body, the hops give it its soul, and the yeast determines its character!"

The idyllic Lendhafen in the heart of the Renaissance city of Klagenfurt will become the beer capital of the Alps-Adriatic region on 17th and 18th May. The first “Alps-Adriatic Craft Beer Days” are the curtain-raisers for a spring season that’s packed with flavour in the biggest town on Lake Wörthersee.

Although Austria as a whole is renowned as a beer nation, it is only this year, for the first time, that the very best, hand-picked craft beer producers from the Alps-Adriatic region will meet in Carinthia. 17 different breweries from Italy, Croatia, Slovenia, Styria and, of course, Carinthia have accepted the invitation from the Carinthian Artisan Brewery and the Klagenfurt Tourism Association, to present their products in the urban surroundings directly on the banks of the Lendkanal at Lendhafen. To name just a few, there are the newcomers on the scene such as Ressel Pivovarna from Slovenia and Tom&Harry from Styria, distinguished brewers such as Monpier de Gherdeina from the Gardena valley, and also “garage brewers” such as the Carantana Craftbeer Brewery. Even some of the giants on the international scene will be making guest appearances. Among them will be the Craft Beer King from Zagreb, Andrej Capka with his Zmajska Pivovarna, and the multiple European Craft Beer Champion, the Schleppe Brewery.

The central element of this meeting of specialists, those interested in brewing and hobby brewers is the exchange of experience, ideas and, of course, the unique taste of each beer. Visitors can look forward to a wealth of flavours and facts: whether you’re looking for a delicate, subtle, top-fermented beer or an outright flavour bomb, the choice of over 80 types of beer guarantees that everyone will find one to suit their taste.

The manager of the Carinthian Artisan Winery and chief organiser, Christian Waltl, sums it all up: “It is primarily about creating a dialogue between the brewers and the public, and about finding the perfect beer for everybody from the immense taste range.” Visitors will be offered plenty of entertainment too, with a beer challenge, talks with special guests and tastings with a beer sommelier.

The festival starts on both the Friday and the Saturday at 4pm and ends with live music from Lucas Leon and Stefan Thaler from 8 – 10pm. Advance sale day tickets cost €12 or, if you decide to visit at the last minute, a ticket will cost €15 at the entrance gate.
