The motto for the 2018/2019 season is “I have a dream”. The inspiration for the stories being told this year is the constant dream of something better, a different life, happiness. Together with the audiences, the Stadttheater will question how these visions meet reality, and reflect what kind of world we live in and what kind of world we would like to live in.
The new season starts on 13th September 2018 with Antonín Dvořák’s lyrical fairytale, Rusalka, under the direction of Eva-Maria Höckmayr and the musical direction of Nicholas Carter. The role of Rusalka is played by Pumeza Matshikiza. This is followed by another musical performance with Mozart’s La clemenza di Tito, under the direction of Marco Štorman, with Attilio Glaser as Emperor Tito. In December, Theatre Manager Florian Scholz is introduced for the first time as director: he will bring La Bohème to the stage, with Lorenzo Viotti as conductor. Rodolfo and Mimi will be played by Matteo Desole and Kiandra Howarth. Pelléas et Mélisande will come to Klagenfurt as a co-production with three theatres in France. At the end of March, the premiere performed by the Klagenfurt cast of Georg Friedrich Haas’ Koma, with lyrics by Klaus Händl is planned. A famous musical for the upcoming season is Evita under the direction of Aron Stiehl, with Annemieke van Dam in the role of Eva Perón.
The drama season will be opened by Shakespeare’s family tragedy, King Lear, under the direction of Stephanie Mohr. Roman Kaminski will play Lear, Ruth Brauer-Kvam will play the fool. Bella Figura, Yasmina Reza’s last stroke of genius, is staged under the direction of Robert Gerloff, with Hilde Dalik as Andrea. Ewald Palmetshofer’s adaptation of Vor Sonnenaufgang (Before Dawn) will be directed by Georg Schmiedleitner. In Sophocles’ Antigone, themes such as human freedom and self-determination will be dealt with under the direction of Lore Stefanek.
The children’s and teens’ programme also has a premiere: Jannik und der Sonnendieb, a winter fairytale for children over the age of six, written and staged by Henry Mason, will be shown on the big stage from November as a work commissioned by the Stadttheater. The well-established cooperation with the WalTzwerk theatre will continue with Patrick’s Trick at the Kammerlichtspiele chamber theatre. Mein ziemlich seltsamer Freund Walter, Die Geschichte von den Frohlobos and Prokofiev’s children’s concert classic Peter and the Wolf are exciting theatre and concert experiences for children aged 0 – 16 years.
The “Statt Theater” series has something special in store: including the successful production of Blutsbrüder from Vienna’s Rabenhof Theater which will be coming to Klagenfurt, the Familie Lässig will give their concert premiere in Carinthia and the Singgemeinschaft Oisternig will perform old songs in German and Slovenian with Bernarda Fink and Tonč Feinig.
