In the eastern bay of Lake Wörthersee you will discover exciting excursion destinations certain to appeal to the whole family. Minimundus – “The Small World on Wörthersee”, Happ Reptile Zoo, the Wörthersee ferries, rides on a vintage tram including a visit to the "Klagenfurt in former times" exhibition as well as Klagenfurt Planetarium, all of which are definite must-sees during your holidays in austria.

Albino Python at Happ Reptile Zoo

Happ Reptile Zoo is the biggest reptile zoo in Austria, providing a species-appropriate home to over 1,000 different animals. The zoo’s main attractions include 20 different species of lizard, 60 species of snake, 20 different types of turtle, piranhas, as well as an insectarium with tarantulas and scorpions. The facility also features mambas, cobras, rattle snakes, goannas, iguanas and agamas, along with giant tortoises, crocodiles and native snakes.

At Happ you will learn a lot about the lives of exotic snakes and lizards, as well as those that are native to Austria. During shows hosted by zoo staff, you will have the chance to touch some of the animals and overcome any fears you might have. Yet another highlight of a visit to the Reptile Zoo is Saturday-afternoon feedings of the crocodiles and tortoises. Dogs (on a leash) are also welcome at Happ Reptile Zoo. Plenty of parking is available essentially right outside the zoo’s front door.

Wörthersee excursion boat Thalia, Photo: Wolfgang Handler

The steamship Thalia is actually one of the oldest ships on Lake Wörthersee, built back in 1909.  The "Thalia" can carry as many as 280 passengers at a time, and is also a popular charter for weddings and other special events. Aside from the Thalia, the fleet includes the engine-driven MS Kärnten, MS Klagenfurt and MS Velden, as well as the solar-powered "Maria Wörth". While you are cruising the lake’s turquoise-blue waters, you might also want to sit down and treat yourself to outstanding cuisine, all the while taking in the enchanting views of villages along the Wörthersee shoreline.

Minimundus - “the small world on Wörthersee”, is a place of enjoyment, relaxation, learning, fun, fascinating sights and memorable experiences. Around 150 models of famous buildings, trains and ships invite you to embark on a voyage around the world in miniature.

The heart of Minimundus is the models, of course, accurate 1:25 scale replicas and, whenever technically feasible, even made from original materials such as sandstone, basaltic lava, and marble – either by schools or professional model builders in the Minimundus workshops.

Your visit to Minimundus also supports children and youth in Carinthia. Minimundus is actually owned by RETTET DAS KIND, a Carinthian charitable organization, with all proceeds from this small world going to benefit needy children, youth and families in a big way.

Stand-up-paddling at lake Wörthersee, Photo: Wolfgang Handler

This trendy new sport (known as SUP for short) has now come to Wörthersee.

From the beaches in Maria Loretto and Klagenfurt, you can set out on a range of paddling tours. The most popular ones take you along the southern shore (the most idyllic option) or directly from Klagenfurt beach (one of the biggest lakeshore resorts in Europe) out towards the north shore.

Sheltered from the wind, you can also explore the Sattnitz or the Lendkanal all the way into the heart of the city. Here you are certain to find a tour to tempt you, especially on days when the wind out on the lake is quite brisk.

Adventure Minigolf Klagenfurt

In the Klagenfurt east bay, directly across from the beach itself, you will discover a brand-new Adventure Golf facility. You can look forward to all kinds of fun and challenges as you tackle 14 holes on synthetic grass that demand skill, accuracy and clever tactics.

Whether you need to putt the ball right down the dragon’s throat, play your approach across a “green” that is actually as blue as the Wörthersee itself, or shoot the ball across a wooden bridge over a stream: Adventure Golf is enormous fun for big and small, for family outings or even company events.
