Thomas Koch – the “Shoafbauer”

After a stroke of misfortune, this trained nurse specialized in sheep farming at his parents’ part-time farm and developed it into one of Carinthia’s largest and most successful sheep farms, operating 100% sustainably. Visionary, holistic, and interconnected thinking, animal welfare, and the responsible handling of the products he produces are his hallmarks as a “Shoafbauer.” The care and preservation of old sheep breeds are another cornerstone of his work.

Sustainability, Tradition, and Delight at the Shoafbauer Farm, followed by “Literature on the Farm”: Franzobel

Immerse yourself in the world of sustainable agriculture, enjoy local lamb specialties, and shop for them on-site. Shepherd Thomas Koch—a trained nurse—dedicated himself to sheep farming after a stroke of fate and has transformed his parents’ part-time farm into one of Carinthia’s largest sustainably managed sheep farms. Animal welfare, a mindful approach to his products, and the preservation of old sheep breeds are at the heart of everything he does. At the farm festival, he’ll offer a glimpse into his work and invite you to enjoy the experience. Afterward, the multi-award-winning author Franzobel will read from his latest novel, “100 Words for Snow”—a literary finale in a rustic atmosphere.
