Culinary Enjoyment in Klagenfurt

Food and drink are amongst life’s essentials. Klagenfurt boasts a wealth of restaurants, bars and coffeehouses that promise their guests exceptional wining and dining experiences during their holidays in Carinthia. During your shopping trip, why not take a break for coffee & cake or some small snacks at a bistro. As you stroll through the historical district and peek into the display windows of some of our downtown shops, how about licking on a delicious ice cream from the Italian ice-cream parlor. The pedestrian zones of the Alter Platz, Kramergasse, Wienergasse and surrounding streets are a veritable culinary paradise.

If you choose to, you can sip and snack practically all day long. The choices range from a delicious cup of Austrian coffee, Klagenfurt Torte, apple strudel, Carinthian-style noodles and wiener schnitzel, to pasta & pizza, gyros and tzatziki, along with specialties from the worlds of Asian and Mexican cooking. Throughout the city, bars serve Austrian and international wines, specialty beers, cocktails, and seasonal drinks such as glühwein, a spiced wine that warms you up from the inside on cold winter’s days and a popular beverage at Christmas markets.

Food and drink are also a focal point of Klagenfurt’s Benedictine Market. It is open every day, but on official market days farmers from Carinthia and surrounding regions fill the stands with a marvelous selection of their home-grown and home-made products.
